Invicta in last four of the British Water Polo Championships

INVICTA WATER POLO CLUB

Match Report: British Water Polo Championships – Manchester Aquatics Centre.

22nd and 33rd February 2014.

Invicta’s success in the preliminaries round saw them return to the British Water Polo Championships Finals weekend again at Manchester Aquatics Centre. The preliminaries result pitched up against Manchester in their home pool in the first semi-final of the day. The second semi-final of the day will be Cheltenham v Portobello. Playing without Sean (who broke his nose whilst on GB duty) for the entire weekend was always going to be a tough ask, but we set out with high expectations following last weekend’s excellent performances.

Sat 22nd February 2014 Manchester v Invicta

The support for Manchester whose home pool is the Aquatics centre seemed to be outnumbered by the support for Invicta, great to see so many supports cheering for Invicta. Unfortunately we got off to one of our typical slow starts and were soon 3 nil down but we steadied things down to end the first quarter 3-1 down. More controlled polo in the second quarter but and unfortunate wrapping for “aggressive use of swimming legs” leaving us to play the final with only 11 men, and we were still only two goals down at half time 4-2. An exchange of goals kept us in the game but a missed man up that would of got us to within 1 goal was missed and Manchester went on to open up a 3 goal lead that we were unable to get back into the game.

Final Score 10 – 5 (3-1, 1-1, 3-2. 3-1)

Scorers: Jack 4 and Brett 1

Majors: Will wrapped, Jack 3, Nick 2, Pat1, Jamie 1 and Brett 1,

Sun 23rd February 2014 Invicta v Portobello

In a very tight first quarter with both sides defending well it remained goalless at the end of the quarter. We conceded a penalty then then came back strongly with 3 unanswered goals but conceded a man-up situation to give Portobello the opportunity to finish the half only 1 down. An early goal and a similarly quick reply from Portobello, in the first minute of the third left us leading 4-3 at the end of the quarter. A goal following us winning the swim-off again put us 2 up but then 4 unanswered goals put Portobello in control of the game, a penalty brought us to within one but three further goals from Portobello made them comfortable winners. We had 2 wrappings in the last minute of the game which will leave us playing the first game of next year’s tournament with only 10 men.

Final Score 6 – 10 (0-0, 3-2, 1-1, 2-7)

Scorers: Jack 3, Brett 2 and Callum 1

Majors: Nick Wrapped, Brett Wrapped, Matt 2, Jamie 2, Oli 1, Callum 1 and Jack 1

From our humble beginnings at the start of the season in Division 2 and winning promotion from Championship 1, to end the season as fourth best team with a place in next year’s European completion we should all be very proud of our progression throughout the season. Here’s to an enjoyable European experience and a very competitive Division 1 campaign next year.

Full Squad

Invicta acheive success in the British Water Polo Championships Prelim Round

INVICTA WATER POLO CLUB

Match Report: British Water Polo Championships Prelim Round – Manchester Aquatics Centre.

8th and 9th February 2014.

Invicta’s success in the 2013 BWPL season saw them invited into the British Water Polo Championships to be held at Manchester Aquatics Centre. The draw placed us in Group B and pitted us against Cheltenham, Lancaster and Sheffield. Group A would contain Manchester, Portobello, Bristol (current holders) and Polytechnic. The format is that each Group Winners and Runners-up go through to the Finals weekend on the 22nd and 23rd February back at MAC. It’s a tough weekend of Polo with three very competitive games against this year 2nd, 3rd and 6th placed teams in the BWPL

Sat 8th February 2014 Cheltenham v Invicta

The team manager has mislaid the Match Sheet (No I am not joking) so cannot report on the scorers and major kings. Cheltenham who are and well drilled club side that finished second to Manchester in the BWPL would prove tough opposition. We started a man-down as a game ban for a wrapping in last year’s final that had to be served this year’s tournament. We set up with a very effective drop and marshalled Cheltenham attack and took a 5-2 lead into half time. Cheltenham fought back in the third quarter winning it 4-1 so that the game was nicely poised at 6 all at the end of the third. The next goal was crucial and with Cheltenham taking the lead for the first time in the game they started to control matters as they held on for a one goal winning margin at 9-8

Final Score 9 – 8 (1-3, 1-2, 4-1. 3-2)

Scorers: TBA

Majors: TBA

Sun 9th February 2014 Lancaster v Invicta

Following the farcical performance from the team manager and the incorrect hotel bookings we arrived for this early morning start in fine fettle for another challenging game against the side finishing third in the BWPL. Following the success of our drop against Cheltenham we continued our fine defensive play and scored the first two goals of the game and ended up leading after the first quarter 4-2. The game started to get a bit fractious and following nine majors in the first quarter there was a wrapping a yellow card for each team and five further majors in the 2nd quarter, but in amongst all this mayhem we took nearly all of our chances and won the quarter 7-3 for a half time lead of 11-5 and in control of the game. Another wrapping for us in the third quarter would leave us to play the last game of the weekend with only three substitutes on the bench, however we kept our scoring going and pulled further away winning each of the last two quarters 3-2 to end up winning 17-9. A game of 24 majors and 2 wrappings was full of incidents but we kept our heads with a fine performance in all aspect of the game, and it’s the first time that we have beaten Lancaster in our clubs history

Final Score 9 – 17 (2-4, 3-7, 2-3, 2-3)

Scorers: Sean 5, Callum 5, Jack 4, Will 2 and Oli 1

Majors: Oli Wrapped, Brett Wrapped, Jack 2, Will 2, Matt 2, Nick 2 Jamie 2, Sean 1 and Conrad 1

Sun 9th February 2014 Sheffield v Invicta

We came into our last game of the weekend knowing that a win would take us through to the finals weekend. We continued with our drop which was working particularly well keeping their very strong centre forward quite in a very tight and cagey first quarter as we ended up leading 1-0. We just kept our nose if front and were always in the lead. In complete contrast to our first game the major count was only eleven for the entire game as we went on to win 8-5.

Final Score 5 – 8 (0-1, 2-2, 1-2, 2-3)

Scorers: Sean 2, Jack 2, Callum 1, Will 1, Matt 1 and Nick 1

Majors: Conrad 3, Nick 1 and Sean 1

The weekend’s highlight was the particularly dismal performance of the team manager – No hats, No balls, No water bottles, No hotel rooms, Lost (and found) glasses and Lost Match Sheet. Despite the team managers appalling effort we still came through with some great results and performances. We return to Manchester on the 22nd & 23rd February to face Manchester in a very tough semi-final. The other semi-final will be Cheltenham v Portobello

Full Squad

BWPL Weekend 5 Guildford Match Details

INVICTA WATER POLO CLUB

Match Report: BWPL Weekend 4 – Surrey University Guildford.

23rd and 24th November 2013.

Invicta continued Phase 2 of Championship 1 of the BWPL season with fixtures against Polytechnic and Sheffield at the Surrey University Pool in Guildford. Invicta had a squad of 12 for the Saturday and only 11 for the Sunday. It is a crucial time in the season and we were looking for victories against our promotion rivals to maintain our push for Division 1 Water Polo next year.

Sat 23rd November 2013 Polytechnic v Invicta

Our first game of the weekend was against Polytechnic a side that had beaten us in the opening game of the season in Division 2. It was a tight affair with no more than a goal in it either way up until half time and we led 5-6. Poly scored two quick goals to go into the lead, but with some excellent centre forward play from Jack we scored three unanswered goals to lead 7-9 at the end of the third quarter. Two early goals in the fourth extended our lead to four, but we were unable to completely control the game letting Poly back into contention but were able to close it out for a 10-12 win. Although it was a game of many majors, 27 in total, we were able to restrict Poly to scoring only 2 of their opportunities. We still struggled with converting our Man-Up’s scoring 2 from 11.

Final Score 10 – 12 (2-2; 3-4; 2-3; 3-3)

Scorers: Jack 4, Callum 4, Oli 2, Sean 1 and Danny 1

Majors: Nick 3, Sean 2, Pat 2, Callum 1, Tom 1, Jack 1, Oli 1 and Jamie 1

Sun 24th November 2013 Sheffield v Invicta

Our second game of the weekend was against Sheffield. Following our creditable draw earlier in the season we were hopeful of getting a result against, probably the strongest team in this division. Another tight affair with no more than a goal in it right up until 35 seconds remaining in the second quarter when we let slip two goals to give Sheffield a 8-6 half time lead. This proved to be the critical point of the game when Sheffield added a further two goals to take a four goal lead, although by this time we had three players ‘majored out’ but we still managed to peg back 2 goals to end the third quarter 10-8 down. An exchange of goals throughout the fourth quarter saw the game end in a 13-11 defeat. Again we defended strongly from our Man Down situations conceding 2 from 9, but again struggled with converting our Man-Up’s scoring 1 from 4.

Final Score 11 – 13 (3-4, 5-2, 3-2, 3-3)

Scorers: Sean 5, Jack 2, Callum 2, Jamie 1 and Danny 1

Majors: Nick 3, Jack 3, Matt 3, Pat 1, Jamie 1, Tom 1 and Danny 1

The weekends results leaves us in second position in the table and we look forward to our matches against Welsh Wanderers, Caledonia and Team Northumbria in weekend 6 at Bristol on the 14th & 15th December 2013.

Full Squad

BWPL Weekend 4 Bath Match Details

INVICTA WATER POLO CLUB

Match Report: BWPL Weekend 4 – Bath University.

26th and 27th October 2013.

Invicta commenced Phase 2 in Championship 1 Division of the BWPL season with fixtures against Penguin and Croydon Amphibians at the Bath University Pool. Invicta had a squad of 11 for these two games after Oli Bray had car trouble and could not make the game on Saturday. It is crunch time in the season and we were looking for victories against a team dropping from Division 1 and a team we had already beaten in Phase 1 of the season.

Sat 26th October 2013 Penguin v Invicta

Our first game of Phase 2 was against Penguin a side that had dropped into Championship 1 from Division 1. We commenced very well with a tight pressing game and in a closely fought first quarter ended up with a 2 – 1 lead. Two quick goals from Sean put us into a comfortable lead which we never gave up and controlled the remaining part of the second quarter leading 6 – 2, and the third quarter leading 10 – 4 at the end of the third. With some inconsistent and strange refereeing decisions we amassed 14 majors and completed the game with only eight players. Although we conceded so many majors, we were able to restrict Penguin to scoring only 3 of their opportunities. We still struggled with converting our Man-Ups scoring 3 from 9.

Final Score 9 – 17 (1-2; 1-4; 2-4; 5-7)

Scorers: Sean 5, Callum 5, Will 3, Jamie 2, Jack 1 and Pat 1

Majors: Jack 3, Matt 3, Nick 3, Pat 1, Callum 1, Tom 1, Conrad 1 and Jamie 1

Sun 27th October 2013 Croydon Amphibians v Invicta

Our second game of the weekend was against Croydon a team who we had already beaten in Phase 1 and we were very hopeful of repeating that result. In a frantic first quarter with 10 major fouls five to each side, some of which were questionable refereeing decisions, we ended the quarter winning 2-1. As with the first game we began to control the game and went on to lead the second quarter 6 – 2 and the third quarter 10 – 4, strangely the exact same scores for the first three quarters as yesterday’s game. As with yesterday’s game we also the opposition back into the game with some sloppy polo with Croydon closing to within 3 goals at one stage. Again we defended strongly from our Man Down situations conceding 2 from 9, and we improved our Man-Up conversion rate to scoring 5 from 8.

Final Score 9 – 14 (1-2, 1-4, 2-4, 5-4)

Scorers: Sean 3, Matt 3, Callum 2, Pat 2, Jack 2, and Will 2

Majors: Jack 3, Nick 2, Will 2, Sean 1, Callum 1, Tom 1 and Jamie 1

Two wins gets our Phase 2 campaign of to a great start and we look forward to our matches against Poly and Sheffield in weekend 5 at Guildford on the 23rd & 24th November 2013

Full Squad

Ben Alcorn(GK); Pat Baker; Jack Waller; Sean King; Callum Bailey; Will Liddie; Tom Davis; Matt White; Nick Jackson; Conrad Rhodes and Jamie Bailey.

BWPL Div 5 Walsall Marlins Match Report

INVICTA MARLINS

PHASE 1 WEEKEND 3 – WALSALL GALA BATHS

12th and 13th OCTOBER 2013

Guys, What a weekend, this was the best team performance by a Marlins team for some time, we stuck to our team tactics all weekend , Spud you were spot on! With only 7/8 players for the whole weekend, then an injury to James after one game, it was just outstanding

The results 10-10 v Old Whitgiftians
10-14 v York
8-9 v Cheltenham Spartans, or really 9-9 !!

Oh for a bench, we would have won all three,

I am not going to report on each game, but I just want to report on performances

Ben Goodchild – superb keeper for the first two games and then out on the field as the only sub v Cheltenham , outstanding

Chris Halls – well , when he performs , he certainly does, against Cheltenham, he had the game of his life, save after save kept us in it for the first two quarters , just remember Chris, we need you to repeat this in stage two, well done , amazing what a pillow fight does to your performance !

Dan Paddon – a super star in the making, whether in attack or defence, you have come of age, those Cheltenham youngsters, just didn’t know what hit them! You can go to the top of this game

Mark Cheetham – probably the best pit attacker in the league, they went full press on us, soon changed that , once they realised that they need to double mark,

Ollie Grauers – captain fantastic, a slow start to the weekend, but as a captain, bonding the team, you are the man

Danny Hanlon, experience and ability to slow a game down, even if you are only taking a rest on the ball or staying afloat, but your work rate and valuable tips you pass on are brilliant

Andrew Kinch – small, but tireless work, defence and ability to steal the ball, was awesome this weekend, great legs! And thanks for warming Chris up with your tactics with the pillow!

Paul Cheetham – always lots to say, but this weekend you delivered, the best pit defender in the league, time after time he won the ball or moved the player to where he wanted him to be and no majors in the game against Cheltenham and he couldn’t get out! No subs

Toby Gomersall – the refs a chowd !! After another of the ball major, but thanks Toby, you did us proud

James Manning – worked hard in the first game, plenty of shots, the confidence is coming, let’s hope the injury doesn’t keep you out

Tony Murphy – his tactics were spot on and the team listened and delivered, you are the best coach in the league, blimey what will happen if we have 13

To all of you, who weren’t there, make sure you are available for the second phase, we are on the verge of something great, a Marlins team that can win again, we need you all, your team is calling!
