Match Report: BWPL Weekend 3 – Luton Sports Centre.

12th and 13th October 2013.

Invicta continued their Phase 1 BWPL Division 2 season with fixtures against Hucknall, Sheffield and Exeter at the new facility at Luton Sports Centre. Invicta had a full squad of 13 for these three games, welcoming back Olympian Jack Waller to the Squad. It is a demanding weekend with three games and the need to gain four points to ensure passage into Championship One in Phase 2 of the BWPL Season.

Sat 12th October 2013 Invicta v Hucknall

We commenced very well with a high tempo game and strong counter attacking to go 4-1 up at the end of the first quarter and then into and 8-1 half time lead. We continued this into the third quarter which we ended up leading 14-2 and we were able to give all players plenty of water time and rest our stronger players in view of our very important game later in the day.

Final Score 17 – 5 (4-1; 4-0; 6-1; 3-3)

Scorers: Sean 7, Callum 3, Pat 2, Will 2, Jack 2 and Steve 1

Majors: Matt 3, Will 2, Steve 1, Sean 1, Jack 1, Conrad 1 and Jamie 1

Sat 12th October 2013 Sheffield v Invicta

Our second game of the day was against Sheffield who hadn’t lost a game all season and was always going to be a close game between the Division’s two best teams. In a frantic first quarter with 10 major fouls seven of them in our favour, of which we were only able to convert one, it ended 2 all. We were controlling the game and creating the majority of chances with Sheffield’s only real option being the counter attack, but we were unable to convert many of our man-up opportunities and it was 4 all at half time. The third quarter was to continue in the same vain and after an exchange of goals the quarter ended 6 all. Sheffield scored the first two goals to put us under pressure but with some controlled polo and excellent shooting we were able to pull the game back to 8 all.

Final Score 8 – 8 (2-2; 2-2; 2-2; 2-2)

Scorers: Sean 3, Callum 2, Will 2 and Matt 1

Majors: Oli 2, Will 2, Ben A 1, Callum 1, Sean 1, Matt 1 and Conrad 1

Sun 13th October 2013 Invicta v Exeter

The three points we gained on Saturday had ensured our place in Championship 1 of Phase 2 in this competition. Season objective one achieved. In our last game against Exeter we controlled the game and immediately went into a commanding 4-0 lead and ended up leading 5-1 at the end of the first quarter. We took our foot of the gas and let Exeter back into the game as we drew the quarter 3 all to end the half with an 8-4 lead. Two early goals took our lead to six and we able to keep this gap through to the end of the game to end up 18-9 winners

Final Score 18 – 9 (5-1, 3-3, 4-3, 6-2)

Scorers: Sean 5, Callum 4, Pat 3, Matt 3 Conrad 1, Steve 1 and Will 1

Majors: Nick 3, Matt 2, Steve 1, Sean 1, Jamie 1, Ben TD 1 and Will 1

BWPL Div 5 Sheffield Marlins Match Report

INVICTA WATER POLO CLUB

Match Report: BWPL Weekend 2 – Ponds Forge Sheffield.

28th and 29th September 2013.

GAME ONE V DOVER .

To beat Dover was a superb effort , after another long journey up there, we had a slow start, 3-1 down after first quarter, with a goal for are debut boy Dan Bonthuys, that strong left hander that we have been missing. Quarter two saw us come out firing  with 4 goals to Dover’s two, the passing improved and the shooting starting finding the target, rather than their keeper, 2 goals from the dangerous Danny Hanlon, both in the pit, a goal from skipper Ollie G and a wonderful lob from Andrew Kinch !! Quarter 3 saw more of the same 4 goals, although should have been many more !!! and only 2 in reply . Ed Govier finally found the target with one of his power drivers, his work for the team is having a major influence this season, at last his potential is coming through, as now one of the senior players of the team  .A first goal from young Tom Redfern, his confidence is growing and I hope to see more goals, like he scores for Beckenham, he has a good shot needs to use it more, another for Dan Bonthuys and a goal for the tireless working Dan Paddon, who is looking  to mature each time he gets in the water. Only one goal in the last quarter for both teams, ours coming from that left hander Bonthuys again, saw us win through 10- 8 , a hard fought win, which should  have been easier. MOM probably Dan Bonthuys, but a great team effort

GAME TWO V SOUTHAMPTON , LOST 15-12

A game that was always going to be tough, after a long night and a long wait in the morning, against a well organised team, who play together regularly. They came us from the off and Marlins made their usual slow start , we were 4 goals down inside the first 5 minutes , then at last we got some control back and 2 goals from Ed Govier, saw us at last believe we could win this game . They continued to be the better team and again outscored us in quarter 2  3-2  with our goals coming from Danny Hanlon and Dan Bonthuys. Once we started pressing them and moving the ball round the arc, when they were playing the drop, we started to come back at them, we were 8-4 down, but quarter 3 saw us respond and wow did they then start to panic, we scored 5 goals to their 4, one each from, Paddon, Govier, Bonthuys , Grauers and Hanlon and some of those goals were excellent, one man up was the best we have seen this season, pass, pass and then Hanlon, bosch !!!! . In the last quarter we got back to 12-11, we could win , believe and it will happen, but we just lost our composure and tired , to finally go down 15-12, 2 goals from Bonthuys and one from Hanlon, just not enough. We had the chances, we were one pass or one shot short of a famous victory, Southampton knew they had been in a game

So guys to Walsall and three tough games , we can win them all, but we have to cut the error rate down and get the tactics right, remember the mistakes you all made, make a 1% improvement all of you and  we could produce that winning polo !!!

Match Report: BWPL Weekend 2 – Ponds Forge Sheffield.

28th and 29th September 2013.

Invicta continued their BWPL Division 2 season with fixtures against Team Northumbria and Croydon Amphibians again at the excellent facility at Ponds Forge Sheffield. Invicta had a full squad of 13 for these two games that we were looking to continue the good work from the second game of our last weekend.

Sat 28th Sept 2013 Invicta v Team Northumbria

Team Northumbria gained promotion to Division Two following their success from last season and this was a game that we were expecting to win. Following a slow start we scored the first goal but ended the quarter at one all. We then allowed Team Northumbria to dictate the game and move into a two goal lead and following an exchange of goals we were losing 5-3 at half time. Following the half time team talk we were buoyed by a penalty save from Ben and went on to score the first two goals of the quarter to even the game, ending the quarter 6 all. Without playing well for the whole game we moved into a two goal lead at 9-7 with four minutes remaining plus an opportunity to take a three goal lead from a penalty which was saved. On the counter attack we conceded a goal then we then gave away a penalty the fourth of the game to tie the game at 9 all. With only 46 seconds of the game remaining we conceded another penalty to go 10-9 behind and were unable to pull a goal back in the remaining seconds despite having a man-up opportunity. We continued to show our rustiness with our Man Up plays as we converted only one from our nine opportunities including the penalty miss.

Final Score 9 – 10 (1-1; 2-4; 3-1; 3-4)

Scorers: Steve 3, Callum 2, Will 2, Oli 1 and Conrad 1

Majors: Oli 3 (Wrapped), Danny 2, Steve 2, Callum 2, Pat 1, Matt 1, Conrad 1 and Will 1

Sun 29th Sept 2013 Invicta v Croydon Amphibians

Following yesterday’s very disappointing defeat and suitably fuelled following a very enjoyable evening along with our Marlins colleagues who were also at Sheffield. We stared slowly but with increasing pressure moved into an early lead including the conversation of our first two man-up opportunities to lead 5-3 at the end of the first quarter. It was to remain a fairly close game until the third quarter which saw us produce some simple but very effective polo and we won by five goals to one to lead 12-5, closing out the game in the fourth quarter as 14-5 winners. The result was to see us in second place in the table on goal difference, with all to play for in the last weekend of Phase 1 where we have 3 games against Hucknall, Sheffield and Exeter.

Final Score 14 – 5 (5-3, 2-1, 5-1, 2-0)

Scorers: Sean 4, Will 4, Callum 3, Steve 2 and Conrad 1

Majors: Callum 1, Steve 1, Danny 1 and Nick 1

BWPL Div 5 Walsall – Marlins Match Report

Saturday 14th Sept 2013 Invicta Marlins v Basildon
Great start for the Marlins, after a nightmare journey. Everyone was texting me on the way up, stuck in traffic. When game started we only had 7 poolside! The rest arrived , minus Tom MacDonald , who never made the game at all, with the first quarter already 3 minutes old and the score 2-2. The first quarter finished 3-3 with Danny Hanlon already on two majors and Giles only just arrived. Goals from Olli, Mark and Danny. The second quarter saw debutant Dan Paddon notch up 4 unanswered goals and with a further goal from Mark Cheetham meant we lead 8-5 and this despite some poor man ups and a penalty miss from Ed.G. Third quarter saw Marlins start to get better organised and the defense showing signs of a team who were now playing together and understanding the calls, there was even smiles on the players faces, as they could see a win for the Marlins there for the taking and a first bar win at the national league for over 4 seasons, no less. We finished the quarter with a 12-7 lead with goals from Mark Cheetham, Paul Cheetham, yes Paul Cheetham, 2 and Danny H one. The final quarter should have been better, poor pressing on the top and a bit of laziness crept in, leaving the final score 15-11, with goals from skipper Ollie G 2 and Mark Cheetham. I have to say though the passing was impressive, particularly in quarter two, when Ed, Dan Paddon, Tom and James combined well. We should have won by more , we should have swam them off the park in quarter four, but considering the buildup, no warm up etc, excellent effort, it can only get better. And man of the match was debut boy Dan Paddon.
Sunday 15th Sept 2013 Invicta Marlins v Sheffield Dolphins
Another fabulous performance in game two by the lads, a tight game which for the first three quarters was extremely tight. Quarter one saw us going 0-1 down after a man down, but we were soon level after a swift passing movement saw Mark Cheetham leap to meet a superb pass from Ed Govier, Ed himself then scored the second from the top and we ended quarter one three all after skipper Ollie G finished off another fine move. Quarter two continued to see a tight game, although Marlins were out shooting them three to one, the Sheffield keeper kept them in the game. James Manning scored twice, again the first being a fine move with James rising high on the post to finish it off and the second another good effort, we finished quarter two, 5-5 and if there was a criticism it was are failure to convert our chances, as we continued to out shoot them 4 to one. The third quarter saw us go 8-9 down, our goals coming from Dan Paddon, Mark Cheetham and the skipper, special mention must go to our defense work , as when we were a man down as the major count rose to 8-3 , we only conceded once and Tom Redfern, Paul Cheetham, Andrew Kinch and Ed Govier did some fine work. With two keepers at our disposal, I must mention some fine work from Ben Goodchild, backed up by Chris Halls. So to the final quarter, we needed to score first and we didn’t disappoint, another fine move, again Ed Govier passing was pin point finding Ollie in the pit to draw us to 9-9 and then a blitz of fine finishing from Mark Cheetham saw him score three on the bounce and we didn’t concede in the final quarter, despite two man downs and we ran out 12-9 winners, which could have been closer to twenty, if the Sheffield keeper hadn’t been so good, well done lads, let’s make sure we continue this fine form, when we go to Sheffield. A final well done to Stephen Taylor making his Marlins debut, who did some sterling work.

BWPL Weekend 1 Sheffield Match Details

INVICTA WATER POLO CLUB

Match Report: BWPL Weekend 1 – Ponds Forge Sheffield.

7th and 8th September 2013.

Invicta commenced the new BWPL Division 2 season with fixtures against Polytechnic and Sutton & Cheam at the excellent facility at Ponds Forge Sheffield. Invicta welcomed back Olympian Sean King, along with two juniors making their debuts for the first team Tom Davis and Ben Tinkler-Davies. Due to unavailability and injuries we entered the weekend with a squad of only eleven, however it was a strong eleven and we hope for a winning weekend to get our push for promotion off to a flying start.

Sat 7th Sept 2013 Polytechnic v Invicta

Polytechnic are a well drilled club side, who contain a number of very experienced players, who proved to be wily opponents as we started our season in typical Invicta fashion, slowly. We scored the first goal but conceded four poorly defended first quarter goals to end the quarter 4-3 down. We were not able to hold the lead again in the game again as we missed the majority of our scoring opportunities whilst Polytechnic took all of their chances including four very well worked Man Up’s .Our rustiness was clearly evident in our Man Up plays as we converted only two from our ten opportunities.

Final Score 10 – 8 (4-3; 1-2; 3-1; 2-2)

Scorers: Sean 2, Oli 2, Callum 1, Matt 1, Will 1 and Steve 1

Majors: Pat 2, Nick 2, Sean 1, Matt 1 Tom 1 and Ben TD 1

Sun 8th Sept 2013 Sutton & Cheam v Invicta

Following yesterday disappointing defeat, our game plan to be out fast and strong in the first quarter as we set about beating Sutton & Cheam and this had an immediate effect as we went into a four nil lead and were in a position to control the entire game scoring many counter attacking goals. It was nice to see our two juniors Tom and Ben TD both scoring their first National league goals. Our Man Up’s continued to disappoint as we converted only three of our nine opportunities

Final Score 6 – 22 (1-4, 2-6, 1-5, 2-7)

Scorers: Sean 6, Pat 3, Callum 3, Matt 3, Oli 2, Tom 2, Ben TD 2 and Will 1

Majors: Callum 2, Pat 1, Sean 1, Matt 1 and Nick 1

Full Squad
Ben Alcorn(GK); Pat Baker; Steve Leathwood; Sean King; Callum Bailey; Oli Bray; Will Liddie; Tom Davis; Matt White; Nick Jackson and Ben Tinkler – Davies.
